The main body of the shoal, created out of fossilised sandstone, is situated 5km offshore. 1.5km wide and approximately 5km long, it ranges in depth from 9 – 27m deep. It is named after a ship called the “Aliwal” that nearly sank here in 1849. There are two shipwrecks: the Nebo, lying 25m down since 1884; and the Produce, which sank in 1974, at a depth of 30m.
Aliwal Shoal is rated one of the world’s top ten best diving sites and attracts many divers from across the globe. Waves Restaurant, with its superb location, offers an upper deck, a lower deck, as well an intimate dining area, to enjoy an excellent vantage point for spotting whales, dolphins and turtles, not forgetting the many dive charters and fishermen enjoying our splendid ocean.
